QuarkNet Summer Workshop Activities
June 27, 2026 — Tesla Coils & Particle Accelerators (9AM-4PM)
  • Repaired and tested a large donation of Tesla coils so they could be put to use as classroom demonstrations for teachers.
  • Explored how the Tesla coils could be safely used to demonstrate high-voltage electricity and electromagnetic phenomena.
  • Started building small “particle accelerators” using a series of coils that turn on and off to give a steel ball bearing a boost as it passes through.
  • Worked on the design, timing, and troubleshooting of the accelerator. This project is still a work in progress!
  • Talked about ways to turn these projects into hands-on classroom activities that teachers could take back to their students.
June 28, 2026 — Plasma, Tinkering & Creative Engineering (9AM-4PM)
  • Visited a local artist/engineer who builds plasma exhibits and spent time learning about his work, his process, and the science behind his creations.
  • Continued working on the small particle accelerator project.
  • Visited a local builder/tinkerer who specializes in taking everyday objects and using them in completely unexpected ways.
  • Explored his approach to building, repurposing, and problem solving as an example of creative engineering.
  • Used these experiences to think about ways to encourage teachers and students to look at ordinary materials differently and approach problems from unexpected directions.
July 11, 2026 — Neutrino Day, Lead, South Dakota (7AM-4PM)
  • Participated in Neutrino Day with the Little Shop of Physics team.
  • Shared hands-on physics demonstrations and activities with the public.
  • Reached more than 2,300 people throughout the day.
  • Had opportunities to talk with participants of all ages about physics through hands-on exploration and conversation.
  • Connected our QuarkNet work with real-world informal science outreach.
July 25–26, 2026 — Building Classroom Activities & Particle Physics Escape Room (9AM-4PM)
  • Spent two days building and testing hands-on science activities and tools for teachers to use in their classrooms.
  • Focused on activities that use accessible materials and give students opportunities to explore physics for themselves.
  • Worked together to develop a high-energy-physics-themed escape room for use in classrooms.
  • Designed puzzles around particle physics concepts, including ways for students to analyze evidence, identify patterns, and solve problems.
  • Tested and refined the activities with classroom use in mind.
  • Discussed ways to make high-energy physics approachable, engaging, and hands-on for students.
